Hirokazu Kore-eda the Japanese auteur of the Palme D’Or winning Shoplifters in 2018, directed La Vérité from his own script in France with two divinities of French cinema – Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche. Catherine Deneuve plays a legendary movie star Fabienne whose memoirs outrage her screen writing Manhattan based daughter Lumir (Juliette Binoche) Its characters live in the disputed territory around truth, untruth and near-truth: the comfortable fiction that we all create around what we remember of our lives. Ethan Hawke plays Lumir’s easy-going, just out of rehab husband, Hank.
