The Wickenden Collection – Sale of Artworks
The Wickenden collection comprises over sixty paintings and limited edition prints, numerous art books, classical records and CDs generously donated by local author Tim Wickenden on behalf of his family. All proceeds from the sale will go to the theatre and help fund its survival. As a result of space constraints, we are not able to display all the artworks simultaneously, so if you are unable to find an artwork by a particular artist listed below, please contact any of our volunteer staff. The artists with artworks in the collection are listed below.
Colin See-Payntonis a renowned wood engraver and observer of the natural world. Now based in Berriew, Powys, he was born in 1946 and his work is held in many major collections. We have ten of his framed limited edition prints at half or less than half price of the unframed works on the artist’s own website www.see-paynton.co.uk The artworks for sale are titled: Eagle Owl, Seven Berwicks Through the Sound, Balance – Tyto Alba, Redbreasted Mergansers and Rainbow, Grey Heron and Eel, Falls on the River Conwy, Diving Ducks, Upupa Epops and Last Chance.
Sarah Van Niekerk
Van Niekerk (1934-2018) was an immensely talented wood engraver. She taught wood engraving at the Royal Academy Schools and later at West Dean College and the London Art School. She provided illustrations for many books and publications as well as producing limited edition prints of engravings. She was Chair of the Society of Wood Engravers. We have a limited-edition print of an incredibly detailed wood engraving Severn Bore for sale that was purchased by Dr Wickenden in 1997.
François de Mauny
De Mauny, who died in 2008, was a Cornish artist who specialised in watercolour paintings. We have a limited edition black and white print of Ding Dong Mine from Carn Galver in Cornwall dated 1986 and purchased by Dr Wickenden in 1997.
McNulty is an Irish artist born in 1949 in Dublin. He produces black/white and aquatint etchings. His works have been exhibited worldwide and are included in many notable collections. We have two very large ethereal limited edition aquatint etchings for sale: Moorland and Blue Flag. www.johnmcnultyart.com
Pugachevsky was born in Kiev in 1937 and specialises in wood engravings. We have a striking colour limited edition print of Raven which was purchased by Dr Wickenden in 2002.

Leslie Benenson (1941 – 2018). Member of the Royal Academy has exhibited her work widely. Limited edition print of engraving of hens titled Light Sussex dated 1983.
John Bryce (1934 – ). Born in London, he is a member of the Wapping Group of Artists. Limited edition print that was purchased by Dr Wickenden in 1999 entitled The Old Barn Glynhir.
Raymond Campbell Smith (1916 – 2016). Born in London and member of the Royal Society of Arts. Watercolour Cornish Jetty was purchased by Dr Wickenden in 1986.
Valentin le Campion (1903 – 1952). Born in Moscow but worked most of his life in France. Four wood engravings Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter available to purchase separately or as a group.
Graham Barry Clilverd (1883 – 1959). British painter, engraver and etcher. Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Signed acquatint etching Polperro dated 1953.
Alfred Heaton Cooper (1863 – 1929). Born in Bolton, he was a popular artist producing watercolours of the Lake District, a number of which were shown at the Royal Academy. Print Great Gable, Wasdale.
Mabel Winifred Cottee (1905 – 1991). Painter born in Nottingham, renowned for painting rural landscapes. Watercolour Thornham Sluice purchased by Dr Wickenden in 1983. Laurie Cotton. Two delightful watercolour paintings On Bolt Trail and Scrubbing Off both dated 1988.
Hilda Gertrude Cowham (1873 – 1964). English illustrator famous for her work on children’s books and ceramic nurseryware. She was one of the first women illustrators to publish in Punch. Two nursery prints to be sold separately or as a pair.
John Fullwood (1854 – 1931). Born in Wolverhampton, Fullwood was a successful painter and etcher who worked in the West Midlands. Two prints signed in pencil of etchings showing riverside scenes.
Brian J Gordon (1939 – ). Born in Liverpool, Gordon is officially classed as a ‘naïve’ artist. Signed print The Day Out.
TJ Greenwood (1947 – 2010). Limited edition print of engraving Blackgame Lek. Purchased by Dr Wickenden at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1984. Anne Hayward. Hampshire artist and member of the Society of Wood Engravers. We have two limited edition prints for sale, that were purchased by Dr Wickenden in 1996 and 1998, entitled Hay Waves and The Poet.
Audrey Hind (1936 – ). She has lived in Anglesey since 1962 and her paintings are a response to living on an island in the Irish Sea under the shadow of the mountains. Limited edition print Cemaes.
Pamela Hughes (1918 – 2002). Cambridge-based artist, she has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition eleven times. Limited edition print of wood engraving Endangered Species. Miriam MacGregor. Capturing farm life, her wood engravings highlight the smallest of intricacies. You Three Lovers is a limited edition print and a highlight of the collection. It was purchased by Dr Wickenden in 2002.
J MacPherson-Haye. 19th Century painter and etcher. Print of etching of sheep in pond signed in pencil.
Ann Ravencroft. Born in Scotland, her work is inspired by her love of animals, mountains and the countryside. Limited edition print depicting geese was purchased by Dr Wickenden in 2002.
Peter Reddick (1924 – 2010). Born in Essex he was an award winning wood engraver who illustrated numerous books for the Folio Society and Penguin. Limited edition print Tal y Mignedd Farm purchased at the Contemporary Print Show at The Barbican by Dr Wickenden in 1999.
Ronald Salmond(1912 – ). Limited edition print titled Boat Repairs at Topsham by this renowned engraver.
Ben Sands (1920 – 2016). Born in Essex, his website www.bensandsprints.com gives details of his work. Limited edition print Mediterranean Market, purchased by Dr Wickenden in 1999.
Derek L Setford. Born in Liverpool, he is a fine engraver producing many works of the natural world. Limited edition prints of a wood engraving entitled Kestrel in a Disused Quarry and another untitled one depicting sheep.
Sue Scullard. Working in Kent she is a member of the Society of Wood Engravers. More information can be found at her website www.suescullard.co.uk. Limited edition print The Wild Waves.
Frederick Albert Slocombe (1847 – 1920). North London etcher of naturalistic landscape subjects. Two prints signed in pencil; one untitled depicting a lake scene with swans, the other titled A Winters Evening. Otto Spring. Signed print of engraving of yacht on a lake dated 1929. No other details of artist.
Glynn Thomas (1946 – ). Born in Cambridge, Thomas now works in east Anglia. Limited edition print Uffington.
Lucien Veder (1902 – 1978). Used the pseudonym, Le Garf, so as not to be confused with his famous father, Eugene Veder. He learned the art of etching from his father receiving bronze and silver medals in 1923 and 1925 respectively for etchings of Paris at the Salon des Artistes Francais. Signed untitled print for sale.
